The Theme Song "Sacrifice Me"

Jenny's Theme - "Sacrifice Me"

Some readers have asked if Jenny's theme song is about suicide. It's not, at least not in the physical sense.

The "sacrifice" Jenny is referring to in the lyrics is her realization that she must let go of the person she thought she was supposed to be so that she can be the person she really is. This is an extremely difficult time for the character because she isn't sure if she likes being a highly-sensitive/empath. How can she possibly learn to love herself?

But she knows she can no longer pretend to be who she is not. There are many things she will have to sacrifice to live her true life...most of all, her fears about living it.

Some of Nathan's story is here in the song, too, as well as Jenny's relationship with him — both intense experiences involving personal loss and mental/emotional struggles.

Do you relate to her story? Or the lyrics of her song? Have you found yourself standing at the identity crossroads?  One honest, the other feigned? Which direction did you or will you choose?

Written by Jeannette Folan and performed by Canadian artist, Taryn Kawaja.

Blow out the candle, it won’t do any good anyway
It’s too dark to leave now, and yet there’s not light enough to stay
When push comes to shove, will they show you the door?
With all that you’ve paid, it’ll still cost you more
The hard fact of life is that none of it’s free
Sacrifice me ~ Sacrifice me

Empty your pockets and think of something clever to say
There’s too much to handle, perhaps we should just call it a day
When push comes to Love, will you show me the door?
With all that I give, you can’t take anymore
So when the times comes to make your decree
Sacrifice me ~ Sacrifice me

It’s hard enough to be normal
As if anyone possibly could
So I’ll stay in my head
And hide under my bed
And pretend to be all that I should be
Sacrifice me ~ Sacrifice me

Light me a candle, you know there’s nothing left you can say
There’s no one to blame here, in time you’ll see it’s better this way
When push comes to shove, I will walk through that door
With nothing to lose, I can’t win any more
The answer to how I will ever be free
I will sacrifice me ~ I will sacrifice me
Sacrifice me ~ Sacrifice me

The rehearsal and recording day with Taryn were magical. It's as if she had read the book...had experienced everything Jenny was going through. This is what a PRO looks like (and sounds like)! Many studio productions are done in pieces where the producer takes a piece of Take #1, #3, #5 and blends them together. But Taryn pulled off the song non-stop after only a few takes.

The Singer - Taryn Kawaja

I was introduced to Taryn in Halifax, Nova Scotia by the studio producer, Lil Thomas, who said, "This is the artist you want to sing Sacrifice Me." And he wasn't wrong.  Taryn brought Jenny's theme song to life with equal amounts of care and abandon.  Her exquisite piano style, attention to detail, and the poignant vocal delivery expressed in Sacrifice Me can be equally heard — and felt — in each of her own compositions.

I was so fortunate to have my path cross with Taryn's exactly when it did, because just a few hours after finishing the recording, she hit the road for a Canadian tour.  My gratitude and best wishes go with her always.

The Cellist - Benjamin Marmen

Being relatively new Halifax, I didn't know where to start looking for a cellist to write and record the supporting music for the song. The first inquiry I made to a friend resulted in the immediate connection with Ben. Talk about luck! I soon discovered that Ben doesn't just play the cello — he plays for the Symphony Nova Scotia!
A few emails later, he met with me to reveal the cello music that
he composed for Sacrifice Me. It blew me away. He wrote with a soulful spirit and played with masterful technique. I didn't think the song could get any better than it was already, but Ben found a way to elevate it even higher. Thank you!

Ben worked magic on his cello on the second floor at the Sonic Temple Studio in Halifax. He demanded perfection of himself and it shows in the final production.
It was hard to get Lil to sit or stand still long enough for a photo. His focus on the task at hand is unbreakable.

The Producer - Lil Thomas

I knew if Sacrifice Me was going to have any chance of a life, it was going to need a good father and a good home. Lil Thomas at Sonic Temple Studio in Halifax proved to be both. He not only identified Taryn Kawaja as the perfect singer/pianist for the song, but he then nurtured us all through the process of tweaking, rehearsing, recording and tweaking some more. It was clear in the end that Lil not only loves what he does... but he's great at it.

The Writer - Jeannette Folan

I've been writing music for as long as I can remember. For awhile I dreamed that I would be a professional songwriter, but then life overtook that dream and so I fell content to write and record songs for myself, family and friends. And though I had neglected my music for years, the urge to write a theme song for Jenny overwhelmed me. What's that they say? It's like riding a bike...or rather, like playing piano. It came back more easily and gracefully than I imagined it would. A joyful experience I won't forget.

Not only does Taryn Kawaja have a haunting voice and a natural, down-to-earth piano style, but she's also an incredible person. This woman is truly dedicated to her art and the integrity of everything she does. I'm so glad I know her.
